High school soccer roundup: Temple wins Duncanville consolation crown; Tigers tie again; Belton girls lose tournament …

DUNCANVILLE – The Temple Wildcats rallied to beat El Paso Bel Aire 3-2 on Saturday to claim the consolation championship at the Duncanville Kickoff Classic.

“We’re really excited,” Temple coach Matt Corley said. “We lost the first game of the tournament to Duncanville’s B team and even though we won 10-1 yesterday (against Dallas Roosevelt) it was kind of hard to judge the quality of opponent.

“I’m proud of our defense. This was a great way to end the tournament.”

Temple (4-3) trailed 2-0 before Jonathan Chavez’s pressure on a Bel Aire defender created an own goal in the 20th minute to make it 2-1.

In the second half Joseph Pickett’s laser from about 30 yards out on a free kick tied the match at 2. With 2 minutes left, Sam Petter booted a crossing pass to Chavez, who found the back of the net for the game-winner.

“I heard the kids saying ‘We shouldn’t be getting beat,’” Corley said. “They were staying positive and kept battling back. As the half went on our guys kept getting better whereas Bel Aire it seemed was hoping for a shootout.”

The Wildcats next play in the Round Rock ISD Tournament, where they’ll open against Round Rock Stony Point at 7 Thursday night at Dragon Stadium.

Belton boys tie again

GEORGETOWN – For the second consecutive game, the Belton Tigers outshot their opponent but couldn’t get anything more than a tie.

Tyler Pate score Belton’s lone goal at the 20:09 mark in the second half as the Tigers (4-0-2) tied Houston Strake Jesuit 1-1 on Saturday at the Governors Cup.

“The guys played good,” Belton coach Tarcisio Mosnia said. “We dominated like we did yesterday (in a scoreless tie to Austin Bowie) but unfortunately Jesuit scored late.”

Belton outshot Strake Jesuit 15-6, but only managed one goal. Mosnia said the scoring drought is concerning, but the Tigers know what they need to do.

“Now we have an idea what we need to fix,” he said. “It is still good we are getting all the shots; we just need to put some away.”

Belton girls lose first game

KATY – The Belton girls dropped their first match of the year with a 3-1 loss to Humble Kingwood on Saturday in the championship game of the I-10 Shootout.

“The girls played well,” Belton coach Barry Elkins said. “We just came out flat and took a while to make adjustments to what Kingwood was doing.”

Kingwood scored three goals in the first 20 minutes before Belton (7-1) finally came alive. The Lady Tigers’ lone goal came 10 minutes into the second half on a shot by Hadley Young.

“That goal gave us some momentum and we had some more opportunities,” Elkins added.

The Lady Tigers return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Dripping Springs.
